Median Filtering Methods in Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging
نویسندگان
چکیده
DT-MRI(Diffusion Tenosr – Magnetic Resonance Imaging) tractography is a non-invasive method of tracing neuronal fiber bundles. DT-MRI measures anisotropy per pixel and provides the directional information of eigenvectors relevant for fiber tractography. Since eigenvectors in each voxel computed from DT-MRI usually contain noise, the calculated principal eigenvector direction may be different from the real direction in the voxel. As the propagation becomes longer, even very small differences in the voxels can make the whole computed fiber direction deviate far away from the real fiber direction [1]. Since in vivo field maps are usually corrupted by noise, the tractography problem turns out to be a mathematically “ill-posed” problem because the tracking results are very sensitive to perturbations by noise. The mathematical attempt to stabilize the solution is known as regularization [2].

Median Filtering of Tensor-Valued Images
Novel matrix-valued imaging techniques such as diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging require the development of edgepreserving nonlinear filters. In this paper we introduce a median filter for such tensor-valued data. We show that it inherits a number of favourable properties from scalar-valued median filtering, and we present experiments on synthetic as well as on real-world images that ...
متن کاملNoise removal in magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging.
Although promising for visualizing the structure of ordered tissues, MR diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has been hampered by long acquisition time and low spatial resolution associated with its inherently low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Moreover, the uncertainty in the DTI measurements has a direct impact on the accuracy of structural renderings such as fiber streamline tracking. Noise removal ...

The power of medical imaging modalities to measure and characterize biological tissue is amplified by visualization and analysis methods that help researchers to see and understand the structures within their data. Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging can measure microstructural properties of biological tissue, such as the coherent linear organization of white matter of the central nervo...
متن کاملReal-Time MR Diffusion Tensor and Q-Ball Imaging Using Kalman Filtering
Diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) has become an established research tool for the investigation of tissue structure and orientation. In this paper, we present a method for real-time processing of diffusion tensor and Q-ball imaging. The basic idea is to use Kalman filtering framework to fit either the linear tensor or Q-ball model. Because the Kalman filter is designed to be an increm...
متن کاملImage Processing for Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance Imaging
This paper describes image processing techniques for Diffusion Tensor Magnetic Resonance. In Diffusion Tensor MRI, a tensor describing local water diffusion is acquired for each voxel. The geometric nature of the diffusion tensors can quantitatively characterize the local structure in tissues such as bone, muscles, and white matter of the brain. The close relationship between local image struct...
متن کاملDynamic Contrast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) and Diffusion Weighted MR Imaging (DWI) for Differentiation between Benign and Malignant Salivary Gland Tumors
Background: Salivary gland tumors form nearly 3% of head and neck tumors. Due to their large histological variety and vicinity to facial nerves, pre-operative diagnosis and differentiation of benign and malignant parotid tumors are a major challenge for radiologists. Objective: The majority of these tumors are benign; however, sometimes they tend to transform into a malignant form. Functional M...
